What began as a gala, black-tie evening quickly grew into a remarkable charitable experience that none of the event guests will soon forget. On April 29, at Toronto’s beautiful Royal Conservatory of Music, Future Focus held their Ultimate Jet Set Experience. This year, all money was raised for the Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre’s state-of-the-art neonatal intensive care unit and follow-up clinic that tracks premature babies to age six because some affects from being born prematurely do not arise until after two years of age.
The master of ceremonies was Global TV News Hour Anchor Leslie Roberts and the food was prepared by renowned chef Mark McEwan. Mark Masri and the Classical Nouveaux group both added musical entertainment to the evening. But the event highlights were the unbelievable acts of kindness and generosity as donations greatly exceeded the expectations of the foundation heads.
“The spontaneity of the event was incredible. At one point, the raffle winner of a ruby ring turned around and donated it as an auction prize. The winning bidder then gave the ring to the little girl whose life was saved at Sunnybrook,” said Geoff Flood, President of T4G Limited and director of the Future Focus Foundation. “It was a wonderful gesture that added to this very special evening. We’ve had many memorable Future Focus events, but this one was truly special in so many ways.”
“Due to presold tickets and great auction items like private jets and golf trips and U.S. Open tennis packages, we knew the evening would be a success,” Mr. Flood added. “But this success is amazing.”
The Ultimate Jet Set Experience was generously sponsored by presenting sponsor Fasken Martineau law firm, pilot sponsor Rogers Communications Inc. and navigator sponsor Fairmont Hotels & Resorts. Event planner Jennifer Bassett again pulled together a spectacular evening. She is, by the way, a volunteer member of the Women & Babies Program Cabinet at Sunnybrook and a mother who lost a premature daughter.

As premature kids grow up, many will struggle with symptoms of cognitive impairment, directly caused by their preterm birth. These symptoms can create significant academic, motor, and behavioural challenges that plague a child for his or her whole life. And these symptoms often don’t develop until a child is older than two.
Sunnybrook’s neonatal Follow-Up clinic tracks these youngsters until they’re six years old – four years longer than most programs – and long enough to identify and help those who are suffering from developmental challenges caused by their preterm birth.
